Advisory Panel

The Digital Banking Club's Advisory Panel is a panel of digital financial services experts, selected to offer their insights and expertise on a wide variety of industry news and trends.

In May 2015, the Advisory Panel gave their insights for their first report: 'Financial institutions must adopt a startup mentality.'

The members of The Digital Banking Club Advisory Panel (see below) are Mark Mullen, Monika Palczynska, Anne Boden, Garvan Callan, David Urbano, Terry Cordeiro, Douglas Blakey, Alessandro Hatami, Benjami Puigedevall, and Jerry Mulle.

CEO - Atom Bank

Mark is CEO of digital start-up bank Atom. Prior to heading up Atom, Mark served in a number of senior roles within HSBC Group, latterly as CEO of first direct and head of UK contact centres for HSBC for three years. From 2009-2011 Mark was regional head of marketing for HSBC in Middle East and North Africa having served as head of marketing for first direct from 2007-2009.

Monika Palczynska

Chief of R&D - Alior Bank

Monika has been working at Alior Bank for 4 years. Initially involved in innovation and project management, she currently co-creates their newly created Innovation Lab, which is a cross-functional team with the goal of keeping the Bank at the forefront of innovation, developing new projects and seeking new areas of business development.

Anne Boden

CEO - Starling Bank

Anne Boden, previously chief operating officer heading the post-crisis transformation at Allied Irish Banks PLC (AIB), is now working on the launch of a new digital bank for the European market. At AIB, Anne was in charge of the bank’s transformation agenda, tasked with reducing its operating costs by €350m over two years as the bank strived to return to profitability. Previously, Anne headed transaction banking at ABN AMRO and Royal Bank of Scotland across 34 countries. Anne was also chief information officer and a member of the board of directors of Aon Ltd.

Head of Customer, Digital and Innovation - Bank of Ireland

Garvan is Director of Customer, Digital & Innovation with Bank of Ireland and responsible for setting and delivering the Digital and Innovation agenda for the Retail Ireland division and supporting the broader banks strategy in these disciplines. Day to day he is focused on digital enablement, innovative proposition development and problem solving across channels, services, products, processes, communications and people.

Garvan joined Bank of Ireland in 2013 as Head of Direct Channels, having come from Danske Bank where he held a number of executive roles including Head of Business Development and Head of Wealth Management & Private Banking and subsequently took up his current role in the Summer of 2014.

Garvan is a strong learning advocate having spent over 10 years as a Council member of the Institute of Banking and completing numerous educational opportunities including an executive programme at Harvard Business School and Singularity Universiity.

David Urbano

Director of Mobile Banking - La Caixa

David Urbano is director of the mobile banking and digital networks at La Caixa, responsible for managing the mobile channel & social network strategies, ranging from defining new services to designing and implementing those services. David has a Masters in executive development (PDD) from the University of Navarra along- side an advanced engineer in telecommunications degree at the UPC in Barcelona. As director of mobile banking, David has seen Caixa Bank record 3.6m mobile banking customers in 2013, the highest number of users of financial services via mobile devices at any Spanish bank.

Head of Proposition Development - Digital, Transformation - Lloyds Banking Group

Terry has over 15 years experience in the telecoms and mobile industry working in both the public and private sector before joining RBS UK (Retail) as head of solution design for mobile in November 2011. Terry is currently the head of mobile for RBS UK (Retail). In this role, Terry owns the strategic direction and delivery of the RBSG (incl NatWest) UK retail mobile banking service. As head of solution design for mobile, Terry was the design authority for the business architecture and solution design of the RBSG retail banking mobile application which currently has over 2m active users.

Douglas Blakey is group editor, Consumer Finance at Timetric, chief of judges for the annual Retail Banker International Awards and lead market advisor for Timetric’s retail banking research division. This produces and maintains more than 50 market leading research reports and has undertaken bespoke consultancy projects for banks, vendors and their advisors. Douglas practiced as a solicitor in Scotland before moving into business information and analysis. He maintains an editorial advisory board of leading bank executives and is a regular guest banking analyst with BBC, NBC, New Statesman and other leading media.

Alessandro Hatami is a corporate serial entrepreneur and digital financial services expert. He has a track record of delivering growth through digital at some of the world's most respected companies in the financial service industries. Alessandro is the co-founder of The Pacemakers, a company that helps large financial services, banking and payments firms go from simply thinking digital innovation to implementing it. Alessandro has an extensive background in international general management, product development, marketing, business development, sales and strategy, having held digital director positions at Lloyds Banking Group. Prior to this, Alessandro was director of large merchant services at PayPal, where his work led to PayPal becoming the leading alternative payment proposition for large UK retailers. Alessandro was a member of the judging panel for The Power 50, 2015.

Benjami Puigedevall

Head of Electronic Channels - La Caixa

Benjami Puigdevall is head of electronic channels and managing director of Caixa Bank. Benjami is responsible for the development of all the electronic channels of Caixa Bank, including home banking, mobiles, digital network and ATMs. Benjami received a bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Barcelona in 1994 and is a member of the board of directors of Self Bank, the internet bank owned by La Caixa and SociétéGénérale. As head of electronic channels, Benjami has overseen the development of Caixa Bank’s contactless ATM, which allows users to operate ATMs without having to enter their cards.

Jerry Mulle

Sales and Marketing Director - Intelligent Environments

Jerry has almost 30 years’ experience of working in the financial services market. He started his career in banking, working at NatWest and then RBS in product and marketing roles across the Retail and Corporate bank before moving to the Cards division where he ended up heading the Commercial cards division and the E-Commerce team.  

Jerry joined Intelligent Environments in 2000 as Product Director, looking after the product strategy and business consultancy team which helped financial institutions to shape their propositions in the evolving online world. In 2004 Jerry took up the role of Sales and Marketing Director.  Jerry’s key responsibilities are to drive sales directly and through our rapidly evolving global partner network, own the relationship and the service we provide to our customers and delivering our innovative marketing programmes, including The Digital Banking Club which Jerry co-founded to provide a forum for those in financial services to debate the key digital issues with their peers across the industry.
