It helped having an imposing venue and a strong panel line up but above all, it was encouraging that there was such lively interest in the topic: the proliferation of devices and challenges for financial services providers.

I am only sorry that time did not permit all of the guests’ questions to be fielded.

A write up of the debate and video highlights will be available by the end of next week.

It is now to be hoped that the UK banks, to a man and women yesterday professing enthusiasm for digital innovation, will put their words into action.

The challenger brands are itching at the bit to get after the established players: Tesco Bank, Sainsburys and Virgin are coming. They are not playing at this: they have made some astute hires and have deep pockets.

It is going to be huge fun watching the developments in UK retail banking in the short to medium term.

And huge fun trying to plan the next Digital Banking Club debate: yesterday set a high bar.
