US-based technology company SmartMetric has developed a biometric fingerprint scanner that can be implanted into payment cards for protection against identity and payments card theft.

The fingerprint reader will fit inside a chip-embedded credit or debit card and will be powered by a rechargeable battery.

The SmartMetric Biometric payments card will use the card holder’s fingerprint as a switch to activate the card for any transaction.

According to SmartMetric president and CEO Chaya Hendrick, developing the cards internal power management system has taken a long time in research and development.

Hendrick said that the SmartMetric card is similar to a small computer, having its own CPR to power the fingerprint scanning it required a powerful internal and rechargeable power source in order to make the card operate for longer than a couple of months.
