To top-up, clients have to download PowaTag app; scan a PowaTag QR code with their device and select an amount.

The app turns magazines adverts, catalogues, posters and product packaging into a point of sale by scanning a specialised tag.

The solution will be available in Vodafone’s 500-plus shops, plus Argos, Brighthouse, Co-Op, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, JD Williams and Wilkinson stores nationwide.

Also, Vodafone has sent thousands of SIM cards to international students coming to the UK in September with Powa Tags printed on the back, allowing them to top up as soon as they arrive.

Vodafone UK consumer director Cindy Rose said: “Our customers have told us they wanted a tool that allowed them to Top Up swiftly at their leisure at a time which is convenient and which suits their schedule.”

“Our Pay As You Go plans offer great value and which are affordable and flexible: with this TopUp addition we are making Vodafone the network our customers can depend on.”

Powa Technologies CEO Dan Wagner said: “PowaTag allows people to top up their phones virtually anywhere at any time and with 46million people expected to use smartphones by 2018 in the UK , so this is perfect timing for us to team up with Vodafone. Mobile users can top up quickly, efficiently, and effortlessly using our platform.”
