Three billion contactless payments were made across Europe in one year: Visa
More than three billion contactless card transactions were made across Europe in the last one year, according to Visa Europe.
In April alone, Europeans used their cards 360 million times with the average value increasing 12% to EUR13.83. Cardholders in the UK, Poland and Spain were the biggest users of the contactless technology.
Visa has nearly 3.2 million contactless payment terminals, an increase of 23% from 2.6 million at the end of April 2015.
The figures revealed that the British contactless adoption increased by 300% to 153 million in April 2016, compared to 51 million transactions in April 2015.
Visa Europe executive director of product management Tristan Kirchner said: “This kind of success hasn’t happened overnight, and it’s down to the sterling efforts across many teams at Visa and the wider payment industry making today’s achievement possible while setting the stage for tomorrow’s technology, including new wearable devices and mobile payment services.”
