Gemalto, a provider of digital security, has announced that Banco Santander is issuing the Optelio Contactless microSD application as part of its University Smart Card program.

The program, a product of Santander’s Universities Global Division, will issue Gemalto’s application in Spain, Brazil, Chile and Mexico.

The application is live at various universities with students, teachers and other personnel now able to use their mobile phones for tasks including building access and as an ePurse to make payments in canteens.

Banco Santander is also adding the mobile payment option to its own mobile payment wallet, and is planning to use the NFC-capable microSD to deploy services such as mobile transportation ticketing.

Vicente Prior, director products and channels at Santander Universities, said "With Gemalto’s microSD technology, students benefit from the speed and convenience of an NFC mobile phone, without needing an NFC-ready handset.

"It offers a fast-to-deploy option to deliver a host of mobile contactless services to our end users and help them become more accustomed to this new way of completing transactions," he added.

Banco Santander’s University Smart Card program is used by over 7m people, in 270 universities across 12 countries.
