Card carrier NTT Docomo and Visa Worldwide launched Japan’s first mobile based virtual prepaid card on 18 September.

Users of the card, called Kouza Docomo Visa Prepaid, will receive a 16 digit card number linked to their Docomo Kouza account. They can then use the number to make purchases from merchants who accept Visa and money will be immediately debited from their account.

Users of the cards do not need to be screened and can choose from either the one-time card, valid for ten days, or the regular card, valid for three years.

Japan’s debit/prepaid market is forecasted to reach JPY650bn ($6.6bn) by 2016.
