Orange Botswana and Visa team up to offer online and in-store payment to Orange Money customers

Mobile network operator, Orange Botswana and financial services giant Visa have announced that Orange Money subscribers in Botswana can now access their accounts 24 hours a day via ATMs and make online and in store purchases.

Mobile network operator, Orange Botswana and financial services giant Visa have announced that Orange Money subscribers in Botswana can now access their accounts 24 hours a day via ATMs and make online and in store purchases.

The enhanced service allows customers to make payments over the internet and at over 4,000 local retailers, and withdraw money from over 300 Visa ATMs across the country.

Dougie Henderson, Visa’s head of emerging products & innovation for Africa, said: "We are delighted to launch this exciting new service first with Orange Botswana. This is a significant milestone in Visa’s strategy to drive financial inclusion, bringing Visa capabilities to mobile money services in Africa."

Orange Money subscribers have to apply for an Orange Money prepaid Visa card, which will be linked to their existing Orange Money account.

Elisabeth Medou Badang, CEO of Orange Botswana said: " The online payment feature that we bring constitutes a phenomenal opportunity for the development of e-commerce for all, including the unbanked. We strive on a daily basis to provide convenience to our customers while making their lives easier with enhanced customer experience".

According to Research ICT Africa 31% of people in Botswana over the age of 16 are unbanked.
